Reading is seen as a vital part of student life at HCCS and to promote this the school subscribes to the Accelerated Reader scheme run by Renaissance Learning.

Students in year 7, 8 & 9 are enrolled and have a fortnightly library lesson.
Students complete a Star Reading test four times over the academic year to give an indicative reading age and a level of books which will help the student make the most progress in their reading.  Too easy and the student won’t be challenged, too difficult and the book will cause frustration.

During library lessons students are encouraged to read books at the correct level and to complete an online quiz.  The quiz should be completed ideally within 48 hours once the book has been finished as it will be fresh in the mind.

We recommend that students should read for at least 20 minutes daily. The school library contains around 5000 books. About ½ the books are fiction, the majority of which are on Accelerated Reading along with an increasing number of non-fiction. Books that students have at home can be checked to see if they have a quiz on them using the tab below.
