The English Faculty is full of enthusiastic and inspirational teachers who strive to make English lessons engaging and valuable.
Throughout a student’s education in English, lessons focus on skills and outcomes, making sure that pupils develop their Reading, Writing and Speaking & Listening skills.
Students are encouraged to use target sheets and marking criteria to set their own goals to ensure that they are progressing in English throughout each Key Stage.
Key Stage Four
GCSE English language and literature
All students at Key Stage 4 study and prepare for both English language and English literature GCSE. For both of these GCSE courses we follow the Eduqas exam board and specifications. Both English language and English literature are assessed by final exam and graded according to the new grading structure 9-1.
With 9 lessons a fortnight, split between the two subjects, students at Key Stage 4 have every opportunity to thrive and develop in their critical reading skills and writing ability ahead of their final exams. Lessons are crafted to ensure every student is thoroughly supported and challenged to achieve their best.
GCSE Film Studies
In addition to the prescribed study of English language and literature at GCSE level, we also offer a GCSE in Film Studies. This course offers students an opportunity to put their analytical and creative ability to work in a different context, transferring their existing skills to a new form.
Students of GCSE Film Studies have 6 lessons a fortnight to build their knowledge and understanding of the film industry, including the in depth study of both the Superhero genre and our close study film made outside Hollywood, Tsotsi. In addition, students are able to apply this knowledge creatively, storyboarding key scenes and creating film poster campaigns and trailers as part of their assessed coursework.
We currently follow the Eduqas exam board and specification for this subject. However, students beginning this subject in September 2017 will be following the new course designed by Eduqas
Key Stage Five
As with the lower years, we offer a range of courses at sixth form, providing students with the option of taking English Literature, English Language, Combined English Language and Literature and Media Studies.
Courses are split between exam and coursework and students have the benefit of two specialist teachers as well as up to nine lessons per fortnight for each course.
Each year, The English Faculty run several theatre trips. Some of these support the courses on offer and some are solely for the joy of a night out at the theatre.
Popular trips include viewings of A-Level texts in action, such as Broken Glass and, more recently, A Streetcar Named Desire and GCSE Literature trips to see An Inspector Calls, although we have been known to throw in a lower school trip to High School Musical on request.
The students’ favourite, however, remains The Woman in Black, which still manages to make members of the English Faculty jump, in spite of frequent viewings!
